happy father's day...

Yesterday, to celebrate Father's day, we headed over to the Badlands for a hike. The weather was a bit rainy, which I thought was perfect because it kept us cool. We had a great time strolling along the Dry River Trail- I just love being outside, exploring.
Anyway, as I have thought yesterday and today about Father's Day, I remembered hearing a quip a long time ago about the big meeting we had in heaven before coming to this earth.
There in the meeting, God stood in front of all of us and announced that we would be going to earth.
He then said: "While on earth, half of you will hold the priesthood, and half of you will have the children...
Men, you choose first."
I though that was funny, and reveled in the fact the women have the harder job, but we can handle it cause we are strong, tough, and quite frankly, super rad.
But I have come to appreciate so much more the role of fathers- particularly fathers in the church. They have the responsibility of the priesthood, to live up to those covenants, as well as the responsibility and weight of providing for the family physically, spiritually, emotionally and intellectually. The weight on a father's shoulders must be intense. Their burden is great. And a man who successfully fulfills his call, who honors it, is a man to be admired.
I have been blessed by two men who have taken the calling of Father very seriously, and in my eyes they have been very successful.
First of all, my dad. He has always been there, leading me along the way. And I know he always will. I'm grateful for the way he raised me, for his love he has shown me even when I was not so deserving. I'm grateful for his personality, his sense of humor, his store stories, his work ethic... I'm just glad that he's my dad.
The other guy is my husband. Carey has been and is a wonderful father to our children. A great example to them of righteousness, and a perfect example of how a real man should be- always seeking to improve himself and the lives of those around him, always learning, polite, kind, respectful, and fun. The quiet way in which he cares for his stewardship is amazing to behold. Meerdink Manor is lucky to have him as the head of the home.
Happy Father's Day Dad and Carey. Love you both!!!

What a fantastic Father's Day tribute to the men in your life. I am so uplifted as a parent to know that Carey is so revered in his role as leader of your home, and as a wonderful role model to his sons.
I am so grateful to your Dad, Jeff, for raising such an awesome daughter -- who I am proud to say is a magnificent wife to my son and a GREAT daughter (in-law)!
Love you ~ Joney
